Favorite Artist Spotlight Inspired By Birch - Susan M. Snook

Pottery artist Susan Snook was born, raised, and resides in the Rochester, New York area. She was a stay at home mom and during that time she began to develop her skills in decorative painting, cake decorating, and now ceramics.

When speaking to her, she says her love for nature prompted the creation of her Birch tree-themed ceramic art. She is a self-taught artist and acknowledges that her talents are "God-given." She admittedly loves trees, and the older, the better! A quirky fact she mentioned to me was that when it comes to trying something new, don't tell her she can't do it or that something may be too hard. "I will become all the more determined to prove you wrong." " I try not to be afraid of failing, or pushing forward by trying new avenues to grow"!

She loves, and I am also a big fan of her line of Birch ceramics as it is not only a line of artwork, but they are functional works of art that are handcrafted and hand-painted. Susan is bringing nature's beauty inside from the outdoors.

Susan described her process as "I begin my process by using the slab technique to get my form. I add slip to the outside to get a textured finish. I use the sgraffito method to reveal branches, hand sculpt, hand-paint, and glaze to get my desired creation. This process includes two firings, a bisque and finally a firing in oxidation".

Living in a lake and mountain area myself, I don't have to tell you how much I love nature! Here in Coeur d'Alene ID, we have the luxury of seeing wildlife daily. Susan's artwork captures the wildlife in such an inspiring way. Her eagles, owls, and birds would be stunning in any nature-lovers home! She says that one of her goals in life is to continue to learn and use the gifts that lay within her, as well as fill your homes and spaces with all of nature's beauty.

To help fulfill one of Susan's goals, leaf & lake design will partner with Susan and be offering her beautiful and unique artwork in our shop. That means you can have a one of a kind handcrafted piece of Susan's artwork in your home decor. Let's chat if you need help placing this unique artwork in your home and giving it a spotlight amongst your home decor.
