I think that most people believe that home staging may not be needed or that it is only about getting more money for your property, which it definitely does, but it can be about so much more than that. I recently shared a story on my social media about a home staging I did, and it was received retrospectively. People who stage and customers who sell remembered why home staging can be so necessary. It's about people! Many stagers commented about how this is the other level of just making things look great. Customers commented that when you love a house so much or are emotionally tied to it, it can be difficult to let it go. Staging can help be part of the process of letting go and moving on to something new. Here is the story, and I hope it positively resonates with you.
My Story
I did a staging job for a client, and when I met the homeowner, he seemed very nervous about having the home staged.
Let me back up a minute. Typically when a home gets staged, the homeowner is not present. It allows us time to get everything done without anyone underfoot, and when we are complete, we have a mini photo session to finish out the day.
Back to the story...
After seeing how nervous he was and going to stay through the staging, I sat down with him and asked him how he was doing and if he was indeed worried about the process. He proceeded to tell me that it was his mother's house, and she had passed away recently. He was choked up, and he said he just wanted to make sure it was going to be thoughtfully cared for when we were in the home staging process. I asked him to share with me all the extraordinary things in the home that she loved. He showed me around the house and pointed out the light fixtures that were very old and shared with me how she had arranged her original furniture and why she loved it and many other important moments in the home.
After we went through all the rooms (which weren't many since it was a lovely small bungalow), he had let his guard down, so much so that he left for the day and came back only to see the finished product. He loved it, and he felt like he could finally let go of the home to a new owner. He said it was because he could now see it differently since it had been staged.
This is what I love about my job. It's incredible that listening to people and changing the energy and visual can evoke such positive feelings!
